Culture Matters…

This week’s Insights Discovery session with a young Finance Technology team was one of the most energizing I’ve facilitated.

Not because the model was new. But because of the culture in the room.

This is a team that genuinely enjoys working together. They hold themselves highly accountable to their work. They know each other’s strengths – and intentionally lean into them.

That foundation makes development work come alive. Through Insights Discovery, we explored individual preferences, team dynamics, and how different colour energies show up in communication, decision-making, and collaboration.

Their team wheel reflected disciplined thinkers and strong system protectors – a group built for precision and integrity.

What made the day especially memorable, though, was the spirit they brought to it. During the breaks, the leader organized themed snack competitions.

One group chose “New Year” – abundance symbolized through mandarins, coins, fish, jelly, apples, and sunflower seeds beautifully arranged on a charcuterie board.

The second group chose “Spring” – baking cookies, a homemade tres leches cake, and thoughtful healthy options.

At lunch, everyone brought Chinese noodle soup (my first time having it), and the leader surprised the group with noodle-themed socks and a friendly competition to see who could handle the spiciest bowl. Three brave participants accepted the challenge. They survived!

What stood out most was this:

The same energy they brought to the food and games showed up in the learning.

• Engaged all day

• Thoughtful questions

• Healthy debate

• Genuine curiosity about one another

When self-awareness meets camaraderie, growth accelerates. A reminder that high performance doesn’t have to be heavy.

It can be disciplined, accountable – and full of joy.

Grateful to work alongside leaders and teams who understand that culture is built intentionally – in both the serious conversations and the small moments of fun.

But now I pay attention […]

Unicorns, Watermelon Toothpaste & a Lesson in Belonging

Nagib and I took our granddaughter Amaal to the dentist today. And I’m not sure who enjoyed the experience more—her or us. The place was buzzing with children who actually seemed happy to be at the dentist. Think about that for a moment. Before Amaal even entered the examination room, she was invited to choose […]

SOME FAMILY TRADITIONS BEGIN IN THE STRANGEST WAYS

When our son Shayne was about five years old, he developed a rather unusual interest. He loved going to funerals. Nagib and I were slightly puzzled. What five-year-old wants to go to funerals? But, being his parents, we naturally came up with the most flattering explanation possible. Perhaps he was deeply spiritual.Perhaps he was an old […]
