Munira Premji

For the first time in my life, I did not make any New Year’s resolutions.  I tried to write resolutions on January 1st, as I always do.  My daughter asked me repeatedly what I wanted to achieve in 2014.  Normally these delicious conversations would start at the beginning of the day and continue through the night.  Then I would reflect on these discussions and write down my resolutions in a brand, new spanking journal.  But each time I tried to talk about, or write down my resolutions, I could not make myself do it.  Very strange!

For inspiration, I looked at my bucket list from 2013:   http://wp.me/p2hqhE-lC

One of my biggest goals was to serve on the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Board.  Well, I’ve started towards that goal:  Nagib and I are on the Executive Committee for the MM5K Walk, raising funds for Multiple Myeloma research at The Princess Margaret.  Woo hoo!  I did not write a book, but did make a movie of my journey with cancer.  This movie premiered on Thanksgiving Day:  http://wp.me/p2hqhE-rW.

In April, we watched the Blue Jays play at the new Yankee Stadium in New York.   Thanks to my friend Naz, I am able to swim (somewhat) and can float beautifully!  With the help of Chef Russell and my mom, I’ve become handy in the kitchen and can whip up some good meals.  I got to meet the Property Brothers at the National Home Show last fall.

I recently received my Senior OD practitioner designation, while I was recovering from my stem cell transplant.

Cancer inspired me to go after my dreams and hold them in both hands.   And then it occurred to me.  The reason I could not write my resolutions this year is because I didn’t feel a need to.  I am living my resolutions every day, on purpose, with conviction.  I didn’t need a list of “to do’s” to give my life direction.  This is probably the greatest gift that cancer has given me.  It forced me to confront what was important and where I needed to focus my attention.
